End of Tenancy Rescue

Ed’s Garden Maintenance Operator Clive from Hampton and Middlesex sent in these before and after photographs.
Clive said “The turf cost £40 plus half a days work and this enabled the Hampton tenant to have the garden reinstated back into better condition than at the start of the tenancy.   This secured return of his deposit in full, and the sale of the property on the 1st day of viewing for his landlord.”  A great investment!

The Dangers of Using a Blow Torch

Ed’s Garden Maintenance Operator Mark who covers the Bournemouth area sent in these photographs with the following explanation:-

Mark was contacted by the customer after his neighbour had managed to catch fire to his hedge.  The neighbour was using a blow-torch to kill weeds and caught the fence alight which subsequently set alight the conifer hedge.  By the time the fire brigade arrived and put out the fire, over half the hedge had been burnt.  Mark was asked to remove the entire hedge including twenty conifer stumps and prepare the area for a fence to be erected and then create a border so that shrubs could be planted.
What a great job Mark has done.

Mark said “This clearly demonstrates how dangerous using a blow torch for weed killing can be!”  The customer is so pleased with Mark’s work that he is now doing regular work for him.

Great Training at RHS Wisley

We had our best ever turnout at our training event earlier in the week at RHS Wisley; always beautiful, the grounds looked particularly stunning with the autumnal colours.  Led by one of Wisley’s horticulture experts our operators had the chance to get their questions answered and expand their knowledge.

Our expert Ray discussed treating and disposing of weeds including  ground elder and the invasive giant hogweed and Japanese Knotweed which can grow through tarmac and even concrete. We also learned more about the nuances of tree preservation orders and liability.  Whilst many of us understand that trees are protected within conservation areas what is less well known is that block preservation orders may exist where the tree skyline is being protected.
The eruption of fairy rings, toadstools are not uncommon as this time of year and we discussed the safe treatment of these fungi that pop up overnight in this damp weather. Ray shared his in-depth knowledge about trimming hedges and the legislation that surrounds the protection of nesting birds, followed by guidance on identifying pests that damage plants and how and when best to treat them.
The morning was rounded off with the opportunity to share experiences with one another;  something everyone always enjoys. The feedback from this highly informative session was extremely positive; We work hard to continue to shape these events so that everyone gets the most out of them.  Our thanks go to Tessa for organising such a brilliant training.

Tulip Tree

Ed’s Garden Maintenance Operator Richard who covers South East London sent in this photograph of the largest tree he has planted to date (over 12 ft / 3.65 m).  Richard also made the support frame for the customer which helps the tree stay upright whilst the root system develops (otherwise it would get blown down in the wind).  The customer sent a text to Richard to say she was very happy and it had given her garden structure.

Ed’s supported Older People’s Day on 1 October

Ed’s Garden Maintenance franchisees supported Older People’s Day with the offer of a free lawn mowing service on 1 October to over 70s in their local area.
Marc Miles in Leighton Buzzard, Clive Edmonds in Hampton,  Steve Frise in Walton-on-Thames, and  Marcus Richardson in Wokingham all participated.
Franchisor Edward Mauleverer said, “It’s great to see the spirit of putting back alive and well  amongst our operators.  One of the great frustrations of the elderly is their inability to look after their gardens as they get older and are less able to do such a physical job.  I should know, as a school boy I was part of a team who worked in the community tending gardens of the elderly.  It was heavy going as many would be incredibly over-grown.  It was around that time that my love of the gardening and being outdoors really kicked in; something that stayed with me and was obviously the seed of Ed’s Garden Maintenance which I founded 11 years ago turning my back on corporate life to do something more meaningful.”
